Death of ex-Air Chief Gunawardena

Air Chief Marshal Terance Gunawardena, the eighth commander of the Sri Lanka Air Force passed away on Friday. He served as the Commander of the SLAF from August 1, 1990 to February 16, 1994.

A product of Wesley College, Colombo, he joined the Air Force on December 31, 1959 and was commissioned in 1961. He served as a squadron pilot over many years and was also a pioneer in the early jet era of the SLAF flying, Jet Provost and MiG 17 jets.

Air Chief Marshal Gunawardena was instrumental in reviving the fighter jet capability of the Sri Lanka Air Force. Under his concept the SLAF acquired the Chinese F 7 which opened up a new generation of men and machines. The Argentinian FMA IA 58 Pucara and the Mil Mi 17 were two other notable aircraft acquired to the SLAF during his tenure. Both the F 7 and Mi 17 made an invaluable contribution during the humanitarian operation against terrorism. He also introduced the zonal concept which was used in administration of the Air Force.

Prior to being appointed as the Commander he has held many key appointments in the SLAF. He was promoted to the rank of Air Chief Marshal upon retirement. He was awarded the Vishista Seva Vibushanaya in recognition of a distinguished career with the SLAF.

The funeral will take place today at 4.00 pm at the General Cemetery, Borella. As per his wishes, it will not be a service funeral.
