St.Peter's retained the Rev.Fr.Basil Wiratunga Shield for the 15th
consecutive year when they beat their traditional rivals St.Joseph's by
'16 points (two tries and two penalties) to 11 (one try and two
penalties) in their Singer Under 20 schools rugger match played at
Havelock Park yesterday. The Joes led 11-5 at the breather.
The Joes opened scoring through an unconverted try scored by Stephen
Gregory early in the first half. Dulith Fernando extended the Joes lead
by firing over two penalties.
But the Peterites came back fighting when Ramesh Rukmal touched down
to score an unconverted try. Both sides could not make much headway due
mistakes at crucial moments such as fragile ball handling or knocking on
while poised to score.
Peterites who were trailing 5-11 at the short whistle reduced the
deficit when Shamri Burah made no mistake with a penalty. The Peterites
took the lead when Kevin Dickson touched down . Burah assured a Peterite
win by slamming over a penalty the make the final tally 16-11. Referee:
