Brazilian police arrest anti-World Cup protesters

Brazilian police have arrested a number of anti-World Cup protesters in Rio de Janeiro as demonstrations over the costs of the tournament linger on. The protesters gathered outside the Candelaria Church in Rio on Friday when about 200 riot police rushed to the scene and arrested them.

The number of refugees and displaced people worldwide has hit a high not seen since World War II, the United Nations’ refugee agency has revealed. Over 50 million people were forced from their homes by the end of 2013, a rise of six million in just one year.

Recession ‘led to 10,000 suicides’

The economic crisis in Europe and North America led to more than 10,000 extra suicides, according to figures from UK researchers. A study, published in the British Journal of Psychiatry, showed “suicides have risen markedly”.
