Uva PC polls in August or early September
The Elections Commissioner will fix the Uva Provincial Council
election in August or early September this year in keeping with the
Provincial Council Elections Act of 1988, official sources said
yesterday.
The election will be held to elect over 30 members to the Uva
Provincial Council. There were 382,000 registered voters in Badulla and
197,000 voters in Moneragala according to the electoral register at the
August 2009 PC polls.
The Elections Commissioner is yet to announce the seats’ composition
for the two districts as there had been a change in the number of
registered voters according to the latest count.
The notice to dissolve the Uva PC was issued on Friday midnight and
the Elections Commissioner will announce the dates to receive
nominations from registered political parties and independent groups
within seven days from Saturday.
According to the law nominations will be opened on the 14th day of
the Elections Commissioner’s notice and closed on the 21st day. The
polls date will be determined on a date not less than five weeks or more
than eight weeks from the day of the Gazette notice.
