Uva PC polls in August or early September

The Elections Commissioner will fix the Uva Provincial Council election in August or early September this year in keeping with the Provincial Council Elections Act of 1988, official sources said yesterday.

The election will be held to elect over 30 members to the Uva Provincial Council. There were 382,000 registered voters in Badulla and 197,000 voters in Moneragala according to the electoral register at the August 2009 PC polls.

The Elections Commissioner is yet to announce the seats’ composition for the two districts as there had been a change in the number of registered voters according to the latest count.

The notice to dissolve the Uva PC was issued on Friday midnight and the Elections Commissioner will announce the dates to receive nominations from registered political parties and independent groups within seven days from Saturday.

According to the law nominations will be opened on the 14th day of the Elections Commissioner’s notice and closed on the 21st day. The polls date will be determined on a date not less than five weeks or more than eight weeks from the day of the Gazette notice.
