Mahamaya, St. Anthony’s and Trinity athletes impress at Munchee Biscuit Athletic Meet

Mahamaya Girl’s College (girls) while St. Anthony’s College and Trinity College (boys) stole the limelight at the annual Kandy District Kids, Junior Athletic Championship and Senior Relay Championship 2014 organised by the Kandy District Athletic Association and sponsored by Ceylon Biscuits Limited, makers of Munchee Biscuits and worked off at the Bogambara stadium, Kandy.

Over 3,500 boys and girls athletes from all parts of the Kandy District participated in this junior athletic championship which attracted a lot spectators. A big bouquet should go to the organising committee headed by its President Susantha Fernando and Secretary Ananda Karunatillake in organising the event on schedule despite the intermittent showers were experienced on the first day. A total of 180 events were worked off.

In the championship for girls, Mahamaya Girls College hardly had any opposition though the girls from Hillwood College provided the them the battle in the track, in certain events.

Mahamaya Girls College in holding sway won the Senior Relay Championship. The Junior Athletic Championship in addition to two of their athletes Madhushani Pilapitiya and N. Kumari carrying away the Best Athletes award.

Trinity College carried away the championship title for boys Senior Relay while St. Anthony’s College won the Junior Athletic championship.

The much reputed Walala A. Ratnayake Central College could not make much of an impact as this school does not have many junior athletes as it has classes only from Grade as it is a Central College.

The highlight of the first days proceedings was the brilliant sprint of 14 years old Nethmi Hapuarachchi of Good Shepherd Convent, Kandy who made the fine use of the wet ground conditions in the 100 metres sprint she nearly broke the existing record to finish ahead of Madhushani Pilapitiya of Mahamaya Girls College who won the Best Athletes award in the events for girls under 15. It is a pity that Nethmi Hapuarachchi participated only in one event when she could have run in the 200 metres and 400 metres event.
