Esala Perahera Mangalyaya from August 4-10

Esala Perahera Mangalyaya of Gambara Devala at Sri Bodhirukkarama
Viharaya, Yahamulla, Aturaliya in Akuressa will begin on august 4 with
Malperahera and a special Deva pooja. The Mal Perahera continues until
August 9 and colourful Maha Perahera will parade streets on August 10
evening.
Development program in Naula PS

The Naula Pradeshiya Sabha will launch a development program under
the Ekagamakata-Ekawedak (one work for one village) concept. Fifty-two
development projects will be launched to promote infrastructure
facilities in rural areas.
Preliminary work is in progress and Rs. 520 lakhs have been allocated
for the purpose.
Mother – daughter duo hold exhibition
An exhibition of oil paintings and pencil drawings by mother –
daughter duo Kumudu Pasqual and Puneesha Monali which commenced on
Friday will conclude today at the Lionel Wendt Art Gallery from 8 a.m.
to 8.30 p.m.
The exhibition will display 75 creations by the mother and 85
pencil-drawings by the daughter.
It is open to the public.
Death of UniWalkers founder chairman
One of the leading businessmen Badre Wimalasekera who was founder
Chairman of UniWalkers Pvt. Ltd. expired.
At the time of his demise, he was Chairman of UniWalkers Packaging
Ltd., and UniWalkers Exports Private Ltd. He was a former Director of
DFCC Bank, Hotel Galadari and the Renuka City Hotel, amongst several
other listed companies.
The cremation will take place at the Borella crematorium tomorrow.
O+ Kidney wanted
Miss Pradeepa Ranasinghe (44) of No. 7, Kohilawatte, Angoda is
suffering from acute renal failure.
Consultant Nephrologist, Dr. Anura Hewageegana of the National
Institute for Nephrology has recommended kidney transplantation to save
her life.
The patient’s blood group is ‘O’ positive. Those who wish to donate a
kidney with ‘O’ group may contact the patient on 0777583591.
Foundation stone for GSC auditorium
The foundation stone for the school auditorium of Good Shepherd
Convent (GSC), Kotahena was laid on Thursday at 7.45 a.m.
The new pavilion was opened on the same day to mark the school’s
145th anniversary this year, said Sr. Mary Renuka Silva, Principal, Good
Shepherd Convent, Kotahena.
Ben Eliatamby PC passes away
President’s Counsel Ben Eliatamby passed away on Friday night in
Colombo after a brief illness, at the age of 74.
A past student of Royal College and of S. Thomas’ Prep, he studied
law at Gray’s Inn in London and qualified as a Barrister before
returning to Sri Lanka for an illustrious 50-year career in the legal
field. He was appointed a President’s Counsel in 1987.
His speciality was company law and he appeared in many landmark cases
in this field. He worked with distinguished legal luminaries of the time
such as H.W. Jayewardene QC, Vernon Wijetunge QC, and Sam Kadirgamar QC.
Many young lawyers who gained experienced as his juniors have gone on to
become President’s Counsel.
He also served as Chairman of Merc Bank, and as a Director of several
leading organizations including the Bank of Ceylon, Ceylon Electricity
Board and Ceylon Continental Hotel.
He leaves behind his wife Mary, sons Deepal (U.S.A) and Niresh
(Ceylon Today), daughter Maneshka (U.S.A), daughters-in-law Meg (USA)
and Tharuka (UNDP), and granddaughters Anoushka and Tharini.
His remains will lie at A.F. Raymond’s Funeral Parlour from Tuesday,
August 5. Cortege will leave Raymond’s on Wednesday, at 4.30 p.m. for
cremation at the General Cemetery, Kanatte at 5 p.m. |
