Azwer condemns Israeli attacks

UPFA parliamentarian A.H.M. Azwer vehemently condemned the recent Israeli attacks against Palestine targeting Muslims and children.

Azwer who joined in the debate on the adjournment motion moved by UPFA MP

Shantha Bandara in parliamnet on July 23 on 1980 General Strike said that the US is behind this brutal Israeli attack on Palestine. The UNPers are holding "pandams" for other countries.

Shantha Bandara in his speech said that the July 1980 General Strike was the most horrendous in the history of the Sri Lankan Public Service. Th 1983 communal riots marked the darkest period in the country's history.

What happened in 1983 was as a result of the 1977 General Election.

" From the documents I have, I can relate all the incidents in chronological order.

In 1983, there were 3,000 killings in this country; 8,000 houses and 5,000 shops were destroyed and 150,000 people were rendered homeless.

In 1981, the renowned Public Library in Jaffna was burnt down by a violent mob.

The Jaffna Library was well known at that time as the pride of Tamil community," he said.

Azwer said sthat when several oldiers were murdered in Thirunelveli, Jaffna communal riots spread all over the country .
