Winner: A trip to Mount Lavinia beach

It was a Sunday. I woke up and got ready to go to Mount Lavinia as
planned with my parents and brother. As we reached there, I saw many
rocks by the beach. We ran down the rocks and went to the beach.
There were many people bathing and having fun on the beach. My
brother and I played with a ball in the water. Some children were having
a bath and flying kites.
After sometime, when we were tired we decided to go to Sathutu Uyana.
We played there for a long time. Finally, when it was getting dark my
father and mother called us to go home. It was a wonderful day and I was
happy.

Winner: Environmental pollution
The environment is a gift given to us by mother nature. We need to
have a good environment to live. It gives us food, shelter, water,
firewood, furniture and oxygen. If there aren’t any rain forests we
won’t be able to survive.
People cut down trees in the forests on a large scale for their
necessities. Factories and vehicles also pollute the environment. The
CFC gases coming from factories and refrigerators increases global
warming. Green houses which capture carbondioxide increase global
warming fast. The chemicals released from the factories to the soil mix
with water springs and cause many diseases.
Therefore, we need to protect the environment. If we cut down a tree
we must plant another. We must send vehicles for eco-tests and check
whether they are environment-friendly. Children must learn to protect
the environment.

Winner: Leisure time activities
People have leisure time. It is not something what we get easily. We
must spend it in a useful manner. People do various activities during
their free time. Watching television is a popular pastime. Playing games
helps us to strengthen our body. Bird watching is another leisure time
activity which relaxes our minds and bodies.

Leisure activities vary according to time, place and age. Children
these days prefer to play video games and have fun. But, adults prefer
gardening or reading. Through gardening they get fresh food and
sometimes a good income. Reading books, newspapers or magazines develops
our knowledge.
Some people do not use their leisure time usefully. We must make sure
to use our leisure time in the correct way.

Winner: How I improved my English
I am not a native English speaker. I study in the English medium. I
thank my parents who showed me the right path giving me my education in
the English medium. It is an international language used all over the
world. At present the world has become globalised due to English and
Internet facilities. Such a language will be a great support to our
future success.
When I want to watch television, the channels I prefer to watch are
the BBC, CNN, Discovery or National Geographic channels. They telecast
educational programs in English.
Reading is my hobby. I like to read autobiographies of heroes and
prominent people, newspapers and magazines which enrich my English
knowledge.
I write essays for newspapers and magazines using new words and
phrases that I come across. Learning English will help me to become a
shining star in the world and fulfil my parents’ wishes.

Dinosaurs
Dinosaurs were large reptiles that appeared on the earth 230 million
years ago. They could walk on their legs unlike other reptiles that
crawled.
Slimlight dinosaurs could run quickly on two legs while heavy
dinosaurs plodded slowly. They were the largest animals that ever walked
on the earth.
There were carnivorous dinosaurs such as Allosaurus and Baryonyx.
Some dinosaurs such as Triceratops and Stegosaurus were herbivorous.
Alligators were stripy dinosaurs that could hide themselves in the
grass.
The largest dinosaurs was Brachiosaurus. Tyrannosaurus was the king
among the dinosaurs. It was a fierce meat-eating dinosaur. The smallest
ever dinosaur was Compsognathus.
Although fossils give us a lot of information, they do not reveal the
colour of the dinosaurs. The lifespan of a dinosaur is not known. May be
it reached an amazing age of 200 years. About five million years ago
dinosaurs became extinct. No one can give the exact reason for it.
The reason could be that there were too many and there was not enough
food for them to survive. Sometimes mammals might have eaten the eggs of
dinosaurs or the falling of a large asteroid on earth killed all the
animals including dinosaurs.
At present we can only see the skeletons of dinosaurs in museums.

The most interesting person I have met

The most interesting person I have met is my mother. “Mother”is the
most beautiful word in this world. My mother gets up early in the
morning and prepares breakfast for us. She works hard throughout the
day.
My mother gives me everything I want. She helps me to do my homework.
She protects and loves me a lot. She helps me when I get into trouble.
She takes care of me when I fall ill.
My mother takes good care of me because she loves me a lot. I love my
mother a lot. When I grow up I will protect my mother and look after her
well.

My hobby
My hobby is reading story books. I read story books during my
leisure. It helps me in my studies and to write creative essays. My
parents often buy me story books. I am a member of three libraries. I
borrow interesting story books from the library.
My favourite books are The long winter, Madol Doova and Jane Eyre.
The long winter was written by Laura Ingals Wilder. It was translated
into Sinhala by Ganga Niroshani Suduwalikanda. The story is about a girl
called Laura. There are five family members in her family. Everything
happens during the winter season.
Madol Doowa was written by Martin Wickremasinghe. He was a famous Sri
Lankan writer. Upali is the protagonist in the story.
Jane Eyre was written by Charlotte Bronte. The story is about a poor
girl called Jane. She lived with her uncle in Gateshead Hall. Soon after
the death of her uncle, she lived with her aunt Mrs. Reed. It is a
beautiful story.
Everyone of us should read books and improve our knowledge. I love my
hobby very much.
