Girls Remand Home in Udunuwara

The Ministry of Child Development and Women Affairs has allocated 15
million to construct a Girls' Remand Home at Werawala Udunuwara, under
the concept of Mahinda Chinthana future vision. The foundation stone for
the new building was laid at the auspicious time by the Chief Minister
of the Central Province Sarath Ekanayake and Child Development and
Womens Affairs Minister Tissa Karaliyadda on August 28.
The Probation Officer of the Head Quarters Gamini Wijekoon said that
children involved in various crimes were subjected to many difficulties
in the past as remand homes are situated only in Colombo. The new remand
homes that would be set up in provinces will solve this problem.
He said that these new remand homes will help police to detain their
child suspects till they are produced at the courts.
These remand homes prevent the child abuse and child protection would
be guaranteed while they are in custody.
The Chief Minister of the Central Province Sarath Ekanayake said that
he would provide many opportunities for the degree holders who come for
the counselling in future.
He visited the boys' remand home and looked into their needs. Central
province Minister for Health, Indigenous Medicine, Social Welfare and
Probation and Child care Bandula Yalegama and some, other guests were
present.
