Differently abled sisters appeal for help
by Christie Fernando, Chilaw Spl. Cor.
Two differently-abled sisters N.P. Shiranthi (28) and N.P. Chathurika
Madhushani (17) eke out a living collecting firewood and water in a
wheel-chair in the remote village of Karuwalagaswewa, Puttalam.
They are impaired from birth. Their mother passed away and their
father's whereabouts are unknown. Shiranthi attended school upto 10th
Standard while Chathurika studied upto 7th standard.
The house they are living is dilapidated and uninhabitable, they
said.
They have a small property, but don't have the means to build a
house. Shiranthi toils hard day in and day out to find the fire-wood
they need, and procure water for their household needs, ablutions and to
cook their food.
She has an uphill task to bring up her sister. They receive a dole of
Rs. 3,000 from the Social Services Department for their sustenance which
is not adequate. They need a decent house with minimum amenities to eke
out an existence.
They would be deeply grateful if anyone could assist them to make a
better living.
