Sabaragamuwa varsity students injured in gang attack

At least 12 students of the Sabaragamuwa University were injured when an unidentified gang hurled petrol bombs at the makeshift hut they had set up to carry out a hunger strike on Friday night, the police said.

A masked group armed with clubs and swords came in a van and attacked the students who were protesting near the main entrance of the Sabaragamuwa University at Pambahinna Junction on the Badulla - Colombo Road.

About 12 students who were injured were admitted to the Pambahinna hospital and six of them were transferred to the Balangoda Base Hospital in a critical condition, the police said.

The Sabaragamuwa University was closed indefinitely last Sunday after several female students had forced their way into the men’s hostel following an altercation over a hostel issue.
