Sports builds character and brings quality of leadership- Former GHS principal

COLOURS EVE: Sports builds character and inculcates qualities of leadership and it was to encourage to children to take to sports that the Colours Eve ceremony was inaugurated 20 years ago during her Principalship said the former Principal of Girls High School Mrs. H.M.M.K. Amunugama.

She made these observation as the Chief Guest at the Colours Eve Ceremony of Girls High School, Kandy at the Constance Hall of the School.

She said that the title Colours Eve will look different and that name was given with a meaning. It is usually Colours Night but this function being held in the evening and that word does not fit in and hence the4 word 'Colours Eve' came into being and this being an evening function.

She said that Kandy Girls High School has many firsts not only in Kandy, but also in the entire island.

They were the first school to play netball and has excelled in many sports. It is to reward the girls excelling in sports that the Colours Eve ceremony was started to be conducted alongside the schools prize giving which reward the students excelling in studies.

The Principal of the School Mrs. Malkanthi Abeygunasekera said that the Chief Guest Mrs. Amunugama has done much to improve both studies and sports in the school during her stewardship and the good tradition is being continued.

The school is doing well in sports winning many championships despite the high competition in studies devoting their time for sports.

They will have utilise a lot of time for practices, travelling and for competitions and their excellent performances is a reflection of their dedication.

Also gracing the occasion as the Guest of Honour was former Prefect of Games and live wire of the school Mrs. Dinali Nugegoda.

Over 400 students were awarded colours and certificates for excelling in their chosen sports. The top awards which were awarded were:

Rising Star: Zainab Saumy (Chess)

Splendid Star: Cadet Band C.S.M. Wickremaarachchi, Cadet Platoon: Dhanushi Ekanayake, C.U.S.O. Wellangiriya.

Hockey: Achala Madhubashini, Dasuni Ranasinghe, Netball: Monali Samarakoon, Swimming: Dilki Perera.

Magnificent Star: Athletics: R. Krithiha and Chanchala Dissanayake.

Chess: Tharushi Wimalachandra, Janani Nanayakkara, Tharusha Deegala.

Netball: Gayanjali Amarawansa, Kaveesha Ekanayake,

Super Magnificent Stars:

Chess: Anuthara Chandrasiri, Dinushi Premanath, Irudi Basnayake.

Table Tennis: Praveena Silva.
