Five fire fighting engines from Japan


Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena receives the keys of fire fighting vehicles from Japanese Ambassador in Sri Lanka. BOI Chairman Dr. Lakshman Jayaweera and other officials look on.

Japanese Government presented five fire fighting vehicles and equipment worth Rs fifty million to BOI to be used in investment promotion zones. Investment Promotion Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena received the keys of vehicles from Japanese Ambassador in Sri Lanka Nobuhito Hobo at a ceremony at the Katunayake Export Processing Zone last week. Minister Abeywardena commissioned two fire fighting vehicles to Katunayake Export Zone, Biyagama Free Trade Zone 2 and 1 to Seethawaka Industrial Zone.

The Japanese Ambassador said that the Japanese Government has provided US$ 83,735 (approximately Rs. 10 million) as a grant to improve Fire Units in the Export Processing Zones to ascertain human security in the zones. The fire protection gears would contribute to enhance the fire prevention and safety measures in several export processing zones in Sri Lanka.

These fire fighting vehicles were given by the local authorities in Japan such as Tokyo Metropolis 3, Yokosuka city 1, Kasukabe city 1. Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said that the two countries are decades old friends.

In various tragedies Japan has extended a helping hand to Sri Lanka.

Even during the tsunami and during other catastrophes such as floods, the Japanese Government had provided a tremendous assistance to Sri Lanka.Minister also brought to the attention of Japanese Ambassador Hobo about the favourable atmosphere for foreign investors and the well-developed infrastructure facilities across the country and the increase of Foreign Direct Investment inflow.
