Sujeewa Jayantha Wijayanayake, born in Gampaha, the former head
Baseball Coach at Ananda College, became the only professional in South
Asia with the International Baseball Umpiring License and the only
practising foreign baseball umpire in Japan. Wijayanayake is the first
Sri Lankan Baseball umpire who qualified at the International Baseball
Federation and Baseball Federation of Asia.
Wijayanayake is one of the youngest chief umpires in baseball in
Japan. He umpired in All-Japan University Baseball Tournament final
round too. He won the award for the most valuable umpire in the Japan
Umpiring Camp, Saitama 2009 from among the 157 Japanese umpires. Sujeewa
had his early education at a number of schools in Sri Lanka Nalanda
College - Minuwangoda, Mahanama College and Ananda College and he then
went abroad to 'Ritzumeiken Asia Pacific University, Japan in April
2006. He graduated in 2010 March as a Specialist in Asia Pacific Tourism
and Hospitality Management. He entered the Baseball umpiring school in
Miyazaki in 2007.
Wijanayake started his Baseball as a player at Ananda College in 1999
and captained Ananda team in 2002. He then was picked for the National
Baseball pool the same year. He coached the Ananda team from 2002 to
2006. He then was picked to go for the Asia Baseball Camp in Thailand.
In 2005 he was picked as Sri Lanka National umpire to go for the AAA
Asia Baseball Championship held in Korea.
The highlight of Wijayanayake's career was umpiring the final of the
AAA Asia Baseball championship held in Korea.
