Winner:
My favourite book series

I have read many series of books. Among them, my favourite series is
the Rainbow Magic series. It is written by Daisy Meadows and published
by Orchard Books. It is about two girls named Rachel Walker and Kirsty
Tate. They are best of friends. Both of them have a big secret.
They are friendly with fairies in fairyland. There are a lot of fairy
groups in fairyland. Rainbow fairies, jewel fairies, weather fairies,
fashion fairies and princess fairies are some of them. Every fairy has a
magical item.
When Jack Frost stole their magical items, Kirsty and Rachel help
them to find it and make fairyland normal. When I read these books I
feel that I am in fiaryland too.
The series is written beautifully and the pictures are really nice.
Because of that I like this series very much. I like to read these books
over and over again.

How to overcome examination phobia

Winner:
Term tests are examinations to test our knowledge. From Grade One to
Grade 13 we face many examinations. Among them term tests, Grade Five
Scholarship, GCE O/L and A/L examination can be cited. In every year we
have to face three term tests. They are first, second, third or year-end
term tests.
At the end of the term we have to face term tests. First term tests
will be held at the end of March and April. The second term tests will
be held at the end of July and August.
The end term test will be held at end of November. After a term test
we get a vacation.
All and sundry work hard for the term test. I too prepare for the
term tests. Since I expect to score high marks for each subject, I work
with diligence. Though some have examination phobia, I don’t have such
phobia. Examination phobia is a fear of examinations.
I think the reason behind it is negligence to study. As children we
must study well. If we do our day-to-day work, we need not be afraid to
face examinations.
I suppose term tests are our friends. We can pass term tests by
sticking to our day-to-day activities properly. If we can’t do our
activities alone we must get advice from teachers, elders and parents.
Some sources that help us to do well are good books, media programs,
text books, work books and the internet. We must try to overcome the
term test obstacle.

My dream to be an engineer
Winner:

Every child has a dream for their future and as I am a child, I too
have a dream, it’s to be an engineer. An engineer does a great service
to the country. He plays a vital role in the development of the nation.
There are many fields in engineering and some of them are software
engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. A child
has to undergo training in any on sphere to be an engineer.
An engineer works hard to construct buildings, towers, factories,
industrial sites and also maintain them. If I success my goal, I will do
a great service to my country.
To become an engineer is not easy, but if I try hard, I can achieve
the goal and there are several subjects to pass well to become an
engineer. They are Mathematics, English and Science and these are my
favourite subjects.
After I pass my Ordinary Level examination, I have to study for my
Advanced Level examination. After that I will enter the engineering
faculty of a university. Engineers face a lot of difficulties and
hardships carrying out their tasks.
No matter how hard it is, I’m going to fulfil my dream.

Chameleons, the rainbow warriors
Chameleons are the ‘rainbow warriors' of the animal world. They are
in pink, blue, red, orange, green, black, brown, yellow and turquoise
colours. Chameleons are the best known creatures with colour changing
abilities.
Contrary to popular belief chameleons do not typically change colour
for reasons of camouflage. It is a way of communication, including
attraction to potential mates. Chameleons have specialised pigment cells
called chromatographs which can quickly reposition thus controlling the
colour of the lizard.
Chameleons are a distinctive and highlys pecialised family of
lizards. They are distinguished by their parrot-like feet, their
separately mobile and stereo-scopic eyes, their long tongues, their
swaying gait, prehensile tail, crests or horns on their distinctively
shaped heads and the ability to change colour.
The colour change is used as an expression of the physiological
condition of the lizard and as asocial indicator to other chameleons.
Research suggests that the social signalling was the primary driving
force behind the evolution of colour change and the camouflage evolved
as a secondary concern.
Chameleons tend to show darker colours when angered, attempting to
scare or intimidate others. Male chameleons show lighter multi-coloured
patterns when courting females. They are found in warm habitats that
vary from rain forests to desert conditions.

Value of trees

Trees are an integral part of our environment. Both man and animals
cannot live without trees.
A trees serves us in many ways. We get fruits, timber, and medicine
from the trees. Trees provide us shelter. We get rain because of the
trees. Trees beautify our environment. They stop the soil erosion too.
Trees are useful not only to the human beings but also to the animals.
Birds built their nest on trees.
We know that the main cause of the drought is the cutting down of
trees. When we cut trees water fountains run dry.
Most of the people have not realised the value of trees. Illegal
felling of trees is common today. It is true that sometimes we need to
cut down trees but we must plant another instead of it. It takes only
one or two hours to cut down a big tree but it takes several years to
grow a tree.
The forest cover in Sri Lanka has been reduced to 20 percent today.
Even the forest reserves that are protected by the government are
destroyed by certain money minded people.
Trees can be regarded as a gift of nature to man and animals.
Therefore we should preserve them forever. If we cut down trees in this
manner, our country will become a desert soon.
Let's save the trees that saves us!

The moon and stars
Oh friends! Take a look at the sky,
Its beauty comprises the moon and stars.
The moon looks like a half of today's pie,
And stars glittering among the cloudspassing by.
How wonderfully has God placed the mall,
The stars forming different constellations adorning the sky.
And the moon,
A bright lamp for our planet earth.
A single moon designed to play,
With a galaxy of stars.
Oh! This displays a mother cuddling her kids,
And what a lovely way to present nature.
The moon and the stars!

Animals are our friends

Animals are our friends. Cat is a sweet animal. It lives with us in
our homes. It is a good animal because it can understand what we tell
them. I love cats so much. I have two little cats at home. They can
understand what I say.
Dogs are also brave animals. They can understand what we tell them.
The police department tames dogs to catch thieves and search for
murderers.
Birds are also our friends. They can sing. The music of birds is
lovely to hear. In the morning we can hear so many songs of birds like
cuckoo birds. Butterfly is too a beautiful insect.
All these animals beautify our surrounding and make us happy.
