TNA confident Govt will resolve outstanding issues

The results of the January 8 Presidential poll heralded communal harmony, mutual understanding and a new political culture TNA frontliner M.A. Sumanthiran MP told the Sunday Observer. President Maithripala Sirisena won with the votes of all communities while his predecessor, according to his own confession received the votes of only one community, he said. The wide acceptance of President Maithripala Sirisena by all communities alike is a significant achievement which would certainly help resolve all outstanding political issues including the Tamil national issue as people of all communities have come together, he said.

Justice and Labour Relations Minister Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe(PC) said that the Government’s 100- day program will accomplish what the people yearned for more than two to three decades. Hydra-headed UNP at the helm

Since representative democracy was established in the country, there had been a large number of parliamentary elections and seven Presidential elections after the 1978 Constitution was introduced. It had been the practice in the past that whenever a new government assumed office after an election, the defeated party candidates and their supporters are humiliated, harassed and victimised.

Elections chief mum on coup attempt

Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya said he could not deny or confirm of any coup d'etat attempt that is said to have taken place in the wee hours of the day after the Presidential election. “I cannot vouch that nothing of the sort happened or there was an attempt like that. It has to be investigated and presented with evidence.”
