Royalists shine in politics

Royal College, the oldest educational institute in Sri Lanka and the school with the largest student population in Asia has been ranked the best with its achievements of records since its inception in 1835.

Royal College has produced world renowned eminent personalities in all fields such as political, legal, medical, engineering, educational, architectural and business spheres.

Sri Lanka's first Executive President Junius Richard Jayewardene was a brilliant product of Royal College who had excelled in Cricket, Rugby, Hockey and Swimming in addition to studies in the classroom during his school days from 1917-1929.

Another distinguished old Royalist Ranil Wickremesinghe who excelled in a number of extracurricular activities at the College became three times Prime Minister of Sri Lanka beginning in 1993.The recently formed cabinet headed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe consist of almost 50 percent of Old Royalists who had left indelible impressions during their scholastic career at the Alma-mater.

Colombo District Leader of the United National Party Ravi Karunanayake was appointed as the Finance Minister. Deputy Leader of UNP Sajith Premadasa became the Cabinet Minister of Housing and Samurdhi, Matara District Leader of UNP-Mangala Samaraweera is the Minister of Foreign Affairs. Kandy District UNP Leader Lakshman Kiriella is Minister of Plantation Industries while Galle District Leader of the UNP Gayantha Karunathilaka was appointed the Media Minister.

Kegalle District Leader of the United National Party Kabeer Hashim is the Minister of Highways and Investment Promotion. Navin Dissanayake is appointed Minister of Tourism and Sports in the present cabinet.

Rauf Hakeem is the Minister of Urban Development and Water Supply and Drainage while D.M. Swaminathan became the Minister of Resettlement Reconstruction and Hindu Affairs.

Anuradhapura District UPFA parliamentarian Duminda Dissanayake is the Minister of irrigation in the cabinet.

State Minister Faizer Musthapha and two Deputy Ministers Dr. Harsha De Silva and Eran Wickremeratne are also distinguished old Royalists.
