Amidst the weekend evening rush yesterday, a fire broke out at around
7.15pm in an eatery, close to the Fort Railway station. No one was
injured in the fire. Fire brigade vehicles promptly rushed to the scene
and doused the fire within 15 minutes, preventing it from spreading to
several adjoining shops. According to Inspector, W.A.P.Weerasooriya of
the Fort Police, who was at the spot, the fire was caused due to a gas
leak from a gas cylinder.
The damage caused to shops has not been estimated as yet. The fire
disrupted power supply to the entire row of shops right upto the Bo Tree
Junction on the left side side of Oldcott Mawatha. Electricity Board
technicians who arrived at the scene, were seen restoring the power
supply to the shops, while disconnecting cables connected to the eating
house.
