At a solemn ceremony at the court complex in Hulftsdorp recently, President Maithripala Sirisena handed over a donation by former Chairman, Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL), Upul Jayasuriya, to Sandhya Ekneligoda, the wife of disappeared political cartoonist, Prageeth Ekneligoda.

The donation to Sandhya Ekneligoda comprised the prize money, amounting to US$ 5000, received by Upul Jayasuriya, the winner of the Second Commonwealth Law Conference Rule of Law Award. He received his award at the 19th Commonalty Law Conference in Glasgow, England, in May.

President Maithripala Sirisena who addressed the select gathering said that the judiciary was completely free and there were no calls from the President's House or Temple Trees, instructing judges on how to deliver justice. He also promised to reopen investigations of murdered journalists and to ensure justice for the dead.
