SL ratifies UN Convention

The ICT Agency's (ICTA) efforts to ratify the UN Electronic Communications Convention bore fruit, when Sri Lanka's Permanent Representative to the UN in New York Dr Rohan Perera deposited the Instrument of Ratification in New York recently.

This is the only UN Convention on the subject of international e-Commerce and on the use of cross border e-Contracts which will come into force on February 1, 2016.

With its ratification, Sri Lanka becomes the first country in South Asia and second country after Singapore to become a State Party to the Convention. This ratification was possible because the country already has the domestic legislation.


Chinese and Lankan businessmen meet

Chinese businessmen have been invited to set up manufacturing units in the country by forming joint ventures with local partners.

The invitation was made by the President of the Sri Lanka-China Business Council of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, Navindra Abeysekera, when he chaired a networking session between a group of visiting Chinese businessmen and local counterparts.

The delegation from the Guangdong Province in China met the local businessmen at the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, recently where they discussed potential business opportunities on either side.


VTA opens two centres in Trinco

The Vocational Training Authority (VTA) opened two training centres in Trincomalee recently.

The Vocational Training in the North and the East of Sri Lanka (VTN) project is a part of the bilateral cooperation agreement between Sri Lanka and Germany.

The project is co-funded by the State Secretariat for Migration of Switzerland. The Sri Lankan partner is the Ministry of Skills Development and Vocational Training.

The two institutes are among 11 planned satellite centres that will support the Sri Lankan-German Training Institute (SLGTI), the project's flagship training centre, now under construction in Kilinochchi.

 


CCC seminar on economy

The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce will hold a seminar on the theme 'Post War - Post Election: Is Sri Lanka's economy ready to make the much needed break' tomorrow, July 20, at 3.30 pm at the Chamber auditorium.

The main speaker will be Deputy Governor of the Central Bank, Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe.

'While economic indicators are good for the first quarter and with the upcoming elections, can Sri Lanka maintain or enhance its growth levels during the rest of the year', 'How will the improved global economic situation and local economic and political conditions help or affect the Sri Lankan economy', are the areas that will be discussed.
