Violence against women:

Task Force calls for zero tolerance

The Task Force established for the implementation of the Report of the then Leader of the Opposition’ s Commission on the Prevention of Violence against Women and the Girl Child, demands creating a culture of zero tolerance for Violence Against Women from all the political parties.

The Task Force chaired by Professor Emeritus Savithri Goonesekere calls on all political parties to commit themselves to -

a. ensure the setting up of an independent National Women’ s Commission.

b. ensure that 1/3 of nominations are given for women at the General Elections.

c. ensure that any person applying for nominations are seriously reviewed if allegations of engaging in violence against women are raised.

d. ensure that no person will be given nominations if found to be engaged in advocating discriminatory and derogatory remarks against women.
