Youth campaigner killed in Rambewa

A 22- year-old youth from Mihintale area was killed and four others injured when a Police vehicle ran over a group of people engaged in election campaigning in support of Minister Duminda Dissanayake in the Rambewa area yesterday afternoon. Police Spokesman ASP Ruwan Gunasekera, said the death was an accident and not an election related incident of violence.

According to Gunasekera, the van belonged to the OIC of the Rambewa Police Division, and he was driving the vehicle on official duty, when the accident occurred.

The body of the youth is lying at the Rambewa Hospital and the four injured have been admitted to the Anuradhapura Hospital for emergency treatment.

The OIC has been arrested by the Mihintale Police in connection with the incident and investigations are continuing.
