signing the Condolence Book at the High Commission of India
in Colombo on Thursday (30), fondly recalling his meeting
with the distinguished scientist and Indian leader, only a
month ago, in Colombo

D. M. Swaminathan, Minister of
Resettlement, Reconstruction and Hindu Religious Affairs met
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the state funeral of
the late Indian President, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam held in
Tamil Nadu on July 30. O. Panneerselvam, Minister of Finance
of the Tamil Nadu State Government is also in the
background.
This 90-year-old grandfather from
Yakkalamulla, Galle, is clearly an engaged citizen. When
Media Minister Gayantha Karunathileka visited his home
during a house-to-house campaign, the senior citizen had
many words of wisdom for the minister, on the role of the
citizen in electing members.
Award for Silumina: Silumina
journalist Inoka Samarawickrama won the Upali Wijewardene
Features Writer of the Year Merit Award (Sinhala) at the
Annual Journalism Awards for Excellence organised by the
Editors’ Guild of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Press
Institute. Here Samarawickrama receives the award from
Chairman, Wijeya Newspapers Ltd. and Chairman of the
Newspaper Society of Sri Lanka Ranjit Wijewardene at the
award ceremony held at the Mount Lavinia Hotel last week.
