Peterite cricketers awarded Best Behaved team
In an age when the spirit of sportsmanship has often been kicked out
through the back door, cricketers from St. Peter's College stood out as
model players to be adjudged the Best Behaved team at the concluded
inter-school championships and quite appropriately picked up their award
at a glittering ceremony held on Tuesday night at the Galadari Hotel in
Colombo.
The occasion was the 37th Observer-Mobitel Schoolboy Cricketer Awards
ceremony and the Peterites were declared worthy of such an award by an
eminent panel of judges representing the Sri Lanka Schools Cricket
Association, the Cricket Umpires Committee, the Junior Selection
Committee and the main governing body of the sport in the country, Sri
Lanka Cricket.
The award for the Best Behaved team was made on the recommendation of
former Sri Lanka captain and current international chief match referee
Ranjan Madugalle who was interestingly the winner of the first Observer
Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year award in 1979.
The Peterite squad was made up of Chandula Jayamanne (captain),
Dineth Timodya, Didulana Medis, Savin Gunasekera, Lakshina Rodrigo,
Sachin Dalpathadu, Manelka de Silva, Vinu Mohotty, Taneesha Weerakoon,
Asanth Malka, Randev Seneviratne, Hashan Wanasekera, Sanjula Madushanka,
Reshan Goonewardena, Dinal Jayakody, Ravindu Silva and Oshan Karunaratne
who were coached by Keerthi Gunaratne.
They were the only team to beat the eventual all-island school
champions Trinity College and remained unbeaten. |
