Controlled prices for packeted sugar
Following a spate of complaints regarding discrepancies in prices of
packeted sugar, a spkosman for the Consumer Affairs Authority ( CAA)
said a gazette notification has been issued that the maximum stipulated
price at which food outlets could sell a kilogram of packeted sugar is
Rs 95.
The price of bulk sugar prices have also been slashed to Rs 70 per
kg, while a kilogram of sprats will cost Rs 425.
We have informed all supermarkets and co-operative outlets about
this.
Any outlet selling these items above the controlled price will be
prosecuted", Director Information CAA, Chandrika Thilakeratne warned the
Sunday Observer.
She said raids were carried on essential items, which were to be sold
at controlled prices under the 100-day Program of the government. "In
spite of this, the number of offenders is still high. In July we
conducted around 2,000 raids in all districts and have filed cases
against traders violating the Consumer Act," she said.
