Holcim confab on waste management

Lead Consultant, Geocycle, Hans-Ulrich Nehm

Geocycle, the waste management arm of Holcim Lanka, which offers environmentally responsible waste management solutions to treat hazardous waste, recently organized an international conference on Safe and Secure Management of Hazardous Materials. The focus of the conference was the critical issue of handling hazardous materials responsibly as one of society's most significant environmental challenges. Foreign and local speakers addressed participants via detailed sessions on the safe and environmentally responsible management of hazardous waste.

Lead Consultant, Geocycle (part of the Lafarge-Holcim Group), Hans-Ulrich Nehm who has vast experience in the application of alternative fuels and secondary raw materials obtained from waste, said that co-processing eliminates waste, primarily hazardous waste, in suitable industrial processes while potentially useful components of the waste are used in the main process. The extreme process conditions in cement manufacturing guarantee the full destruction of all hazardous organics while the ash components are used as raw material.

"Sri Lanka is ahead of many because of the excellent level of understanding," he said. "The problem is that humans generate a lot of waste, and most people would not even recognize their own waste a few days after they discard it in the early stages of decomposition. In many cases we have to segregate the waste again in a way that it can be destroyed safely, partially serving as a fuel," Nehm said.
