Farmers cry foul
Experts say aspirations not reflected in Budget
2016:
According to the 2016 Budget, the most adversely
affected sector is agriculture and the Budget proposals do not
address the aspirations of the farmers. Chairman, Agro Lanka PLC,
Danushka Priyankara said if farmers refrained from using fertiliser
it would have an adverse effect on the harvest.

Policymakers fail to pay heed to TU grievances:
Tougher action in the offing
Tougher trade union action in the next few days
is inevitable as the government has failed to address the grievances
of workers, Ceylon Bank Employees Union (CBEU) sources said.
Secretary of the CBEU (Peoples Bank branch) Ranjan Senanayake said
the CBEU Executive Committee will decide the next course of action
soon.

Tea and marine fishing growth rates drop
Tea and marine fishing suffered major falls in
growth rates posting a growth of 3.9 percent and 8.6 percent during
the third quarter of this year, a release from the Department of
Sensus and Statistics said.

Budget 2016, a continuation of complacency - Dr. Sally
Economic analysts condemned the 2016 Budget
which has been amended in an unprecedented manner widening the
budget deficit further and failing to address fundamental issues in
the economy. Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake acknowledged that
the Budget deficit would rise by Rs. 7 billion as a result of the
amendments.
