Westerner Priyadharshani in shattering show

Chamali Priyadharshani of the Western Province shattered a 13-year-old Sri Lanka long jump record while Uva Province’s Ayesha Maduwanthi created a new Sri Lanka record in the hammer throw on the second day at the 41st Sri Lanka National Sports Festival held at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium, Diyagama, Homagama yesterday.

Priyadharshani recorded a 6.43-metre distance erasing the previous record of 6.40 metres set by Nayanthi Kumari Chandrasena in May 2002 in Bangkok.

“I trained hard aiming for a gold medal at the next South Asian Games,” Priyadarshani told journalists after her record breaking feat.

Ayesha Maduwanthi’s 43.18 metre hammer throw distance renewed her own Sri Lanka record. The Uva Province athlete erased her previous Sri Lanka record of 42.74 metres set in last year’s National Sports Festival held in Anuradhapura.

Meanwhile HI Sandaruwan established a new meet record in the Pole Vault final.

Sandaruwan, the current Sri Lanka record holder of the event leaped 4.83 metres to erase the previous National Sports Festival record of 4.72 metres set by Pradeep Perera in 2001.

However, Sandaruwan holds the Sri Lanka Pole Vault record of 4.91 metres which was set up this year at the Selection Trial for the South Asian Games.
