Gateway College wins all-island chess title

Gateway College emerged Under 13 All Island B Division champions at the recently concluded chess tournament that was played at Moratuwa MahaVidyalaya.

Gateway's Under 11 team emerged second runner-up in the same tournament.

During the tournament, Gateway Under 13s beat Sripada M M- Ratnapura 6: 0, CWW Kannangara MMV-Matugama 5.5: 0.5, St Aloysius College- Galle 3: 3, St John's College-Nugegoda 4.5 : 1.5, De Mazenod College- Kandana 4.5 : 1.5 and lost to Dharmasoka College- Ambalangoda 2.5 : 3.5. The Under 11s beat Sarasaviuyana MV - Peradeniya 4.5 : 1.5, Dambadeniya Central College -Dambadeniya 4 : 2, Kottawa Dharmapala MV -Kottawa 4 : 2, D. S. Senanayake College - Colombo 4 : 2 and drew with Dharmasoka College -Ambalangoda 3:3 and Maliyadewa Model School-Kurunegala 3:3.

Among the Under 13s, Gateway's captain Hevidu Samarakoon, performed exceptionally well by winning all six rounds he played in.

Venuja Wijekoon too contributed well by winning five rounds.

Among the Under 11s, Thisuka Jayaratne (all six rounds) and Senith Weerasooriya-Captain (5.5 out of six rounds) and Brijesh Saravanabavan (5) were the outstanding performers.
