Police warn Kandy big-match revellers

Police in Kandy have warned that so-called big match revellers who violate the highway code or indulge in any form or harrassment or inconvenience to the public will be dealt with accordingly.

To enforce the law police will be out in their numbers as spirits run high and rivalry at boiling point.

A police spokesman said provocative or intimidating behaviour will not be tolerated while vehicles with more than the stipulated number of passengers will be stopped and brought to book in the same way that drunk drivers will be dealt with.

Road demonstrations and hat collections will also not be tolerated.

"We want fans to enjoy the cricket and confine their big match environment to the grounds. Law breakers are liable to be arrested and locked up and they will not have a big match", he said. In upcoming big matches, Trinity take on St. Anthony's and Vidyartha confront St. Sylvester's on March 11 and 12 at Asgiriya and Pallekele respectively.

In the following week Kingswood and Dharmaraja play their big match on March 18 and 19. Other matches are between Wariyapola Sri Sumangala and Sri Rahula and Nugewela Central vesus A Ratnayake. Another big match is between Azhar Central and Madeena Central.
