The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) as placed vendors of sweetmeats,
cakes, rice, dhal, canned fish, spices, flour, dairy products, cooking
oils and other popular consumer products under scrutiny, ahead of the
New Year.
Chief Food Inspector at the CMC, Lal Kumara, told the Sunday Observer
that MoHs, food inspectors and public health inspectors in all 47 wards
of the Colombo Municipality have been directed to check on the quality
of food items that are in heavy demand.
Public Health Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ruwan Wijemuni, said,
"Officers will pay special attention to wholesale outlets in Pettah,
Grandpass and Kotahena areas where sub standard foods proliferate.
Storage facilities, labelling systems including the display of expiry
dates and samples will be sent to the City Analyst's laboratory. If
found sub standard, legal action will be taken," he said.
For any complaints contact the CMC hotline 2676161. |
