Statue: ACBC writes to NP Governor
By Isuri Kaviratne
The All Ceylon Hindu Congress (ACHC) has written to the Governor of
the Northern Province voicing concern over the construction of a 62-feet
high Buddha statue in Nainativu, which is also referred to as Nagadeepa,
after the Buddhist temple.
President Kandiah Neelakandan and General Secretary S.
Thillainadarajah of the ACHC state that the island also hosts globally
recognised Sri Nagapoosari Amman Kovil. They state that the construction
was unwarranted and Hindus have objected to it.
Meanwhile, NP Governor, Reginald Cooray said he is yet to receive the
letter as he was in Colombo last week. "I have to be impartial when
dealing with this matter," he said.
"There is an Inter-faith Society which consists of Buddhists,
Christians, Hindus and Muslims in Jaffna which promotes religious
harmony and supports the celebration of Vesak too," he added that this
was one way of promoting reconciliation. |
