Largest heroin haul:
Suspects to be arrested
Investigations are under way to arrest the suspects in connection
with the heroin haul where over 100 kilograms of heroin were confiscated
on the high seas, according to the Sri Lankan Navy.
The joint operation was coordinated by the Police Narcotics Bureau
and the Sri Lanka Navy. This is believed to be the largest stock of
narcotics seized so far by the Sri Lankan law enforcement agencies.
Investigations revealed that the consignments had reached Sri Lankan
waters through foreign vessels and were to be transferred to land by
multi-day fishing trawlers in the guise of engaging in fishing. These
stocks are then transferred to Colombo via the Southern Expressway,
according to the Narcotics Bureau sources.
The Navy and the police apprehended 10 Iranians and one Pakistani
with the vessel that was used to smuggle drugs.
