Olympic silver medalist Susanthika Jayasinghe was hospitalised
yesterday morning, due to injuries following a domestic assault.
Jayasinghe, who was severely beaten, lodged a complaint with the
Weliweriya police alleging that she was assaulted by her husband.
Weliweriya police consequently arrested her husband Dhammika Nandakumara.
OIC of the Weliweriya Police Rohana Munasinghe said she was unable to
walk without support when she arrived at the police station and was sent
to hospital in a police vehicle. “She was severely beaten on her arms
and legs.
“The incident had occurred last morning and she was not in a stable
condition when she arrived at the police station,” he said.
Nandakumara was produced at the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court and was
granted bail yesterday afternoon.
Director Gampaha General Hospital Dr. Ajith Danthanarayana said that
by Saturday afternoon Jayasinghe’s condition had returned to normal. “We
have subjected her to scans and x-rays and found that there was no
serious injury.” Dr Danthanarayana however said the well-known
sportswoman was being kept under observation. |
