Peterites outplay Trinity to win 29/20
by Hafiz Marikar
Hundreds of St. Peter's College rugby fans walked out of Pallekelle
stadium happily, after their favorite school gave off a good performance
to beat Trinity College by 29 points (1 goal, l penalty try, 1 try and 4
penalties) to 20 (1 goal, 2 tries and 1 penalty) in a hard fought second
round Division I inter-school 'Cup' competition match yesterday.
St Peter's were awarded the Lt. Gen. Dennis Perera Shield and
Peterite S. Stephen was awarded the Player of the Match. At half time
Trinity led 15-13.
In terms of physique, both schools were equal, and they towered over
each other. The two sides showed how the oval shaped ball should be
handled with the three-quarters superior and the forwards also in a good
mood to dish out a good game of open rugby. The two schools surprised
everybody with their fine display of run and pass rugby, they played
fast and the ball handling was superb. They used their rugby skills, and
believed that this is not an individual game but a team. The two team's
coordination too was good. The Trinitians who have a fine side should
have dominated the game, but the Peterites knew how to address and took
the upper hand in the second half. The Trinitians made a great impact
and though they lost were superior in their forward play.
They had the power and knowledge of rugby, but failed to drive home
the advantage. The Peterites resolute tackling prevented the determined
efforts of the Trinitians from scoring. One defect was that the Petrites
three-quarters kept close to each other and this prevented their
otherwise excellent moves. For St. Peter's P.L. Nonis and D.C. Fernando
scored the tries and all the kicking was done by S. Stephen. For the
Trinitians it was N.D. Rajaratnam, L.V.A. Wijasuriya, and A.H. Boyagoda
who scored the tires. Wijasuriya made one conversion and put over a
penalty.
