The Civil society of the country was one of the major forces which contributed to the victory of the current government. Different factions of citizens’ movements rallied behind the common campaign to bring a government based on good governance to power in Sri Lanka. One and a half years later, the same factions of civil society launched into action yet again, this time to ensure the government makes good on election promises.

The proposal by the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government to allocate 30 percent of nominations to female candidates to contest in the upcoming Provincial Council Elections mandatory, has met with mixed reactions by activist groups.

 

Special court for accountability with TNA and victims- Foreign Affairs Minister

Foreign Affairs Minister Mangala Samaraweera said the Government hopes to set up special courts to address accountability issues in discussion with the major Tamil Party, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and victims of the conflict.
