Bouquet to Kalubowila Teaching Hospital
This letter is in appreciation of the work by doctors, nurses and
staff of the Emergency Treatment Unit (ETU) and the Medical Intensive
Care Unit (MICU) of the Kalubowila Teaching Hospital which carries out a
yeoman service. They put their heart and soul into their work to give
relief to suffering patients, especially children.
Although we lost our dear son to the deadly Dengue virus, the doctors
and the nursing staff did their best to save the child. We deeply
appreciate the services of them all. The doctors of Ward 3 of the MICU,
staff nurses and other staff at this ward spared no pains to save the
life of our son. We appreciate their care and concern.

University students’ street protest unethical
I think it is only in Sri Lanka that unrest among University students
has gone to unprecedented levels in comparison to other countries.
Recently there was a students’ protest march organised by the Kelaniya
University Students Association. Their demand was to release the
university students who were arrested during a protest opposite the
University Grants Commission.
In Sri Lanka, it has become a regular practice for our university
students to rampage on the streets for a trivial matter of their
respective universities or for national policies of education enacted by
the Government. It is pathetic that our university students are always
misled by certain political parties to win their political mileage.
These bankrupt political parties use innocent students as guinea pigs
to achieve their political goals causing disrepute to the government. It
is also a pity that our university students who to a certain extent are
mature and educated, but do not understand that resorting to street
protests is unethical and mars their character and conduct.
In the recent incident, the police took every effort to disperse the
student mob, by even showing them the court order but they did not heed
and continued their protest march towards the Presidential Secretariat
disregarding the Court order, at this juncture the police used tear gas
and water cannons to disperse the mob.
During this incident, three students were hospitalized and another
three were arrested.
I would like to ask from the Students’ Association of the Kelaniya
University, Is this not shame for them that undergraduates have been
attacked, humiliated and even arrested by police.
We cannot blame the police because they had an injunction order from
the Fort Magistrate to prevent the protest. These undergraduates
violated the law of the country and the magistrate’s order. I wonder
whether these undergraduates have basic common sense.
Are they fit to continue their studies further? If they have a
grievance or problem, there are many ways to solve them by peaceful
means. If they want to meet the President or the Prime Minister and air
their grievances they can do so through proper channels without causing
pandemonium in the country.

Legends of the Hindi cinema
At one time Hindi cinema was a craze in Sri Lanka and Hindi actors
and actresses of this era were a force to reckon with. I recall some of
these greats and their children. Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand
are the top three actors in Indian cinema. Many in the next generation
too followed their parents’ footsteps.
Prithiviraj Kapoor had three sons Raj, Shammi and Shashi Kapoor. Raj
Kapoor also had three sons. They are Randhir, Rishi and Sanjiv Kapoor.
Rishi Kapoor married actress Neetu Singh and Ranbir Kapoor is their
son.
Randhir Kapoor married film actress Babitha. Kareena and Karishma
Kapoor are their daughters.
Shammi Kapoor married Geeta Bali and Dhilip Kumar married Saira Banu.
Dev Anand married Kalpana Kartic and their children are Suneel and
Deveena. They live at No.2, Iris Park, Juhu Beach, Bombay.
Sunil Dutt married Nargis and Sanjay Dutt is their son.
Dharmendra married Hema Malini. Sunny Doel and Bobby Doel are sons of
Dharmendra’s first marriage. Manoj Kumar’s son is Kuna Goswamy who acts
with Sri Devi in ‘Kalakar.’
Rajesh Roshan who directed the music in ‘Taj Mahal’ is Rikith
Roshan’s grandfather.
Rakesh Roshan music director and actor in ‘Koi Mil Gaya’ and ‘Krist’
is Rikith Roshan’s father.
When it came to acting many of them trained in various film schools.
Asha Parekh, Sadhana, Joy Mukerjee, Siddu, Usha Khanna and others were
trained in the Filmalaya school of acting in Bombay. Dev Anand’s
Navketan Films are processed at the Navketan studios. This studio is
owned by the three brothers Vijay Anand, Dev Anand and Chetan Anand.
B.R. Chopra’s B.R. Films is also owned by three brothers. They are
B.R. Chopra (Producer) Yasha Chopra (Director) and Dharam Chopra
(photography)
Now, however B.R. Films now comes under Yasha Raj studios in Bombay.
‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ was the last film directed by Yasha Chopra.
Unfortunately, he could not attend the premiere at Yash Raj Studios due
to his untimely death. He was represented by his spouse Ms. Premila
Chopra and the stars in the film, Sharukh Khan, Katrina Kaif and Anushka
Sharma.
Past producers of the Baratha Gee Vindana programme, Sunil
Premarathna and Chandima Premarathna should be applauded for the
encouragement given to Ranjith Edirisinghe Varuni Uthpala so that the
correct information is given regarding Hindi cinema as viewers are
anxious to know the correct details.
