Kandy sports good despite limited facilities

Successful sportsmen and sportswomen from Kandy can be proud of their achievements with limited facilities, specially schools. This was possible due to their keenness, and the backing received from parents, schools and coaches. Records reveal that Kandy has produced some of the best sportsmen and women in almost every sport. Today, most sports are organized at school level. Thanks to the schools , old boys and parents who have given a huge boost to these games.

What Kandy needs today is more and more facilities, like proper playing fields and training centers. The pint-sized municipal playgrounds is in a good shape thanks to the sports department. When the Bogambara stadium was under the Municipal Council, every evening there were over 100 youth indulging themselves in some physical activity. Sad to say, today the stadium gate is locked most of the time and there are more security staff roaming than sports taking place.

All young and old sportsmen and women are expecting a lot from the sporting minister Lakshman Kiriella, the Governor Niluka Ekanayake, Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake, provincial councilor Shanthini Kongage. The Minister of Sports is doing a good job, and hope that he could help put right the short comings so that the sport loving public in Kandy could benefit immensely.
