Viharamahadevi BMV and Welimada Central netball champs by V.T. RAJ BADULLA SPORTS CORRespondent Viharamahadevi Balika Maha Vidyalaya and Welimada Central College won the Badulla and Welimada Zone under 15 Netball Championships respectively. The tournaments were organised by Badulla District Netball Association. Mrs. Manel Samaraweera, President of the Badulla District Netball Association has organised a tournament among schools in Uva Province in order to improve the standard of netball in Uva Province. Accordingly, the tournaments are being conducted in Badulla, Bandarawela, Welimada and Mahiyangana. All the semi-finalists in each zone will meet in June this year at Badulla. Thereafter Mrs. Samaraweera hopes to select players who will be trained under national coaches. The tournament at Welimada was played at the Central College grounds where the Welimada Central College beat Wangiyakumbura MV 17-0 in the first semi-final while Dikkapitiya Vidyalaya beat Girambe Sri Kemanada Vidyalaya 12-9 in the second semi-final. In the final, Welimada Central College beat Dikkapitiya Vidyalaya 20-5. 16 teams participated in the Badulla Zone tournament which was conducted at the Vincent Dias Stadium. Badulla District co-ordinator Mrs. Dushanthi Gunawardena organised this tournament in Badulla and it was sponsored by the Ministry of Sports, Uva Provincial Council. In the first semifinal at Badulla, Viharamahadevi Balika MV beat Badulla Tamil Girls MV 19-2 while Hali-Ela Central College beat Badulla Vishaka Balika MV 17-9. In the final, Viharamahadevi Balika MV beat Hali-Ela Central College in a close finish 13-10 after leading 8-4 at the short break. |
