Dinesh Deheragoda - fastest time but Team Mobile win 10 out of 13 events by S. M. JIFFREY ABDEEN, Kandy sports corr Dinesh Deheragoda driving a Mitsubishi Evolution VII clocked the fastest timing of the day but Team Mobil swept the boards at the Kotmale Speed Hill Climb organised by the Upcountry Motor Sports Club and held at Kotmale last Sunday. Dinesh Deheragoda who is enjoying a very good motoring season put up a fine display to record the timing of 0.56.391 seconds which was just behind the course record of 0.55.011 seconds held by Rohan de Silva since year 2000, the year in which the meet was last conducted. Dinesh Deheragoda timed 1.01.599 mts in his first run which was dominated by Nishan Weerasuriya with a timing of 0.57.588 seconds. But Deheragoda came back into reckoning with vengeance in the second run to carry away the laurels. Team Mobil started the motor racing season on a highly successful note when they won 10 out of the 13 events they participated in the meet. Mobil Team skipper and formula racing star Rohan de Silva led the winning spree by securing two wins, followed by two wins each by riders Suresh Fernando and Indika Gurusinghe while Rajitha Cooke, S. A. Harsha Amarasiri, Romani de Silva and Shafras Junaid won an event each. They started with a bang winning the first five events. Team Caltex had just three winners in Nishan Weerasuriya, Rizvi Farouk and Dammika Peiris but could not match the team effort of Mobil. Their biggest disappointment was Nalin D. Perera - usually a winner could not produce a single win the three events he participated but succeeded in getting placed, and was not far behind the winners. The loners who won their respective events were Mangala Jayasiriwardena, Thejasiri Gunatillake, Nimesh Pathberiya, Devaka Amarasuriya and Mahes Weerasinghe who won the event for Novices with a fine display and his timing was better than that of the winner of the Group A over 14.0 kg/BHP event and showed plenty of promise in hill climbing. There was also plenty of spills and the first being Rohan de Silva who in a screeching run in his Formula Car lost control of the vehicles as top speed and crashed into a ditch at corner where there was no corner marshall. The spectators rushed in and pulled out both the man and machine and there was no damage done. Rohan de Silva when questioned by this writer said that he was alright and did suffer from any shocks. He thanked everyone present for the assistance rendered and after checking the machine drove back to the start line. On the way, he crossed both the Course Car and the Ambulance which was coming with the siren sounding the emergency note but by then everything was over and the spectators had a hearty laugh. The second spill was when veteran Cassim Wahab (Subaru Legacy) who did a fine run and a few hundred metres away from the finish line ended in the drain and continued with the race after being helped out. The third spill was by Lenil Kankanage who too lost control of his Honda Civic and ended in the shrub jungle. |
