Conrad Francis will swim in Commonwealth Games

by LESLIE FERNANDO

Conrad Francis is the solitary swimmer to represent Sri Lanka at the Commonwealth Games to be held in July this year in Manchester, England.

The former Josephian breast-stroke specialist, Conrad, presently in Australia on a swimming scholarship, was selected and nominated by the National Amateur Aquatic Sports Union (NAASU) and approved by the National Olympic Committee/National Selection Committee for the Commonwealth Games.

Conrad, who swam at the Sydney Olympics and the last Asian Games, performed well at the recently concluded World Games held in Moscow. He established four new Sri Lanka national records in the 50-metres breast stroke - 30:52 secs, 100 metres breast stroke 1:07:01 secs, 50 metres butterfly 25.94 secs and in the 100 metres butterfly - 57.08 secs.

According to a NAASU official, Conrad is undergoing special training in Australia and he will be here by next month and will join the contingent to England.

Waterpolo team for Asian Games?

Meanwhile the National Amateur Aquatic Sports Union of Sri Lanka has decided to send a waterpolo team for the Asian Games to be held in September-October in Busan, Korea.

NAASU has approached the National Olympic Committee for its approval. H. U. Silva, the Secretary, National Olympic Committee said that the NCC has not yet approved the team. However, the final 'say' will be with the National Selection Committee who has to ratify the waterpolo team.

What is the claim for the waterpolo team to play in the Asian Gems? This is the question posed by many past players and officials.

Age Group meet

The popular Age Group Swimming Championships - the trial to select swimmers for the Asia Pacific Age Group Swimming Championships to be held in Hong Kong in August this year, has been postponed to July 11, 12 and 13 at the Sugathadasa Stadium swimming pool due to the long school holidays.

This meet was earlier scheduled to be held on June 6, 7 and 8 at the same venue.
