At Royal College Colours Nite : Main objective is to participate not win

by SRIYAN OBEYSEKERA

Citing the one-legged disabled swimmer at the 2002 World Games, a former old boy of yore, Summah Navaratnam urged Royalists that the main objective should not be to win but to take part in the field of sports. Hailed as the fastest man in Asia when he held sway in the 1940-50 era, Navaratnam revisited his 'alma mater' at the 6th colours awarding ceremony 2002 of Royal at the Navarangahala last night as chief guest.

Tracing a 169-year-old long history Navaratnam who was the first Royal captain to win both Bradby matches in 1943 recalled the era of education during his time and now. "Then there were no outside influences in effect of purity of competition. Sports helps withstand stress. It is a forerunner in laying the foundation for a healthy existence", Navaratnam said. The ceremony took on a romantic note to the strains of music and college dance troupes.

The Royal Principal, H. L. B. Gomes earlier recounted the achievements of the college sportsmen this year which was reflected in the 111 trophies annexed.

"The rugby team had been outstanding with the highest aggregate and single score. At cricket Royal was the only school to win the Lemonade sixes twice and the Sir Frank Gunasekera Trophy and the boys had hit the top in table tennis and badminton in recent years," he said.
