by LESLIE FERNANDO

Sprint Queen Susanthika Jayasinghe is the undisputed winner of the Millennium 2000 Duncan White Memorial Award. She received the award from the chief guest Dr. Nagalingam Ethiriveerasingham the former athletic star at the Duncan White Memorial Award ceremony held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institution auditorium yesterday.

Susanthika won this prestigious award for the second time. In 1997, was the first occasion.

The ceremony was organised by Duncan White Sports Foundation and Foundation president Ms. Jenifer Moragoda presided.

Susanthika received the award for feat in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games where she won the bronze medal in the 200 metres event-22.28 secs.

"Susanthika's performance has brought out hundreds of new track and field athletes, some starting as young as eight or nine. Susanthika's example will no doubt bring out more track and field athletes who will demonstrate their achievements over the next few years", said the Dr. Nagalingam, Ethiriveerasingham the first Gold Medallist 1958 at Asian Games in Tokyo Japan. He won the gold for high jump with a new Asian Games record of 6 feet 8 inches.

"I earnestly hope Susanthika will do better in Athens in 2003 than in Sydney. She should be given all the encouragement and help", said Ethiriveerasingham and added that Susanthika should not train at Torrington Square or at the Sugathadasa Stadium but should train abroad and participate at top meets abroad.
