Australia on course for Ashes triumph

PERTH, Australia, Nov 30 (Reuters) - England were 238 runs behind with nine second-innings wickets standing after the second day of the third Ashes test at the WACA on Saturday.

Needing to win to keep the series alive, Nasser Hussain's depleted side were left facing the prospect of defeat inside three days after reaching stumps on 33 for one.

Australia led by 271 on the first innings after compiling a daunting total of 456 in reply to England's 185. Damien Martyn (71), Ricky Ponting (68) and Steve Waugh (53) all scored half-centuries for Australia while Craig White captured five wickets for 127.

The tourists were forced to play without paceman Chris Silverwood who was ruled out of the match with an ankle injury sustained while fielding on day one.
