Chris and MCA-True partners in progress by Pelham Juriansz Chris Obeyesekera, the 32nd President of the Mercantile Cricket Association (MCA) had his photograph unveiled by vice patron Rienzie Wijetilleke at the MCA pavilion on Thursday November 28. Tyrone Perera, MC for the evening described Chris Obeyesekera's contribution to the MCA as "True partners in progress". "Chrys" he said "joined the MCA in 1994 and became its President in 2000 at the turn of the millennium." Incumbent President Tyrone de Silva said that all that Chrys has done for the MCA can be seen around at the MCA. "During Chrys' tenure we were able to open the MCA Cricket arcade, the latest addition to the MCA. It is well stocked with cricketing gear and other sports items and sportswear. We have gone far in the MCA and I must thank all the past Presidents for their contributions. A cricket Academy has been established giving young cricketers a chance to establish themselves. In this respect I must pay a tribute to Chrys for the initiative taken in setting up the Academy. It was his brainchild and he saw that it became a reality. We are happy that he has agreed to serve on the Committee managing the academy. Under the Presidentship of Chrys the MCA saw the blossoming of a new star class Board room, the Air Conditioned Restaurant, Cricket Arcade and the modernised bar", concluded Tyrone de Silva. Obeysekera, the Immediate Past President in his speech said that his association with the MCA goes back to 1994, when he represented the Hatton National Bank (HNB) on the Committee. " I met and worked with several gentlemen of high calibre" he said, "K.M. Nelson, Bertie Fernando, Gihan Siribaddana, to name a few. I set up a vision that the MCA would be the most versatile professional institution in the country. We see the most dynamic cricketers in the MCA Tournaments, and most of Sri Lanka's best Test cricketers and national cricketers of the past have made their mark in the MCA organised tournaments ranging from Divisons 'A' to 'G'. "Cricket is a mind game and we like to see Counsellors set up in our Academy that houses about 25 young cricketers at the moment. I like to thank all those who assisted me and have graced this occasion today", said Obeyesekera in conclusion. Rienzie Wijetilleke - the Managing Director of HNB unveiled the photograph of Chrys Obeysekera and the Past Presidents, CTA Schaffter, C. Chellaraj, K.M. Nelson, Upali Mahanama, Bertie Fernando, Gihan Siribaddana, were all presented with life membership cards. |
