Thomian-Peterite old boys vie for Michael Chanmugam Trophy

by Pelham Juriansz

The old boys of S. Thomas College, Mount Lavinia and St. Peter's Bambalapitiya, will revisit the cricket field on December 8. The stars of yore meet for the Michael Chanmugam Trophy at the Thomian grounds in Mount Lavinia.

It will be the second match in 2 years in what is going to be an annual feature.

The holders of the trophy St. Peter's College are fielding a strong team and will be all out to retain the trophy. Led by their 1975 skipper Bernard Wijetunge, they have in their ranks many outstanding players of the quality of former Sri Lanka schools wicket-keeper batsman Reynold Anandappa, opening bowler Keerthi Gunaratne, former Sri Lankan wicket-keeper batsman Amal Silva, Angelo Wickramaratne, Niranjan Rodrigo, Ashok Witharne, Srinath Wijeyeratne, Peter Deckker, Valentine Abeysekera, Vinodhan John, Dion Jayasekera, Suren Perera, Trevor Faux and Marlon Ranasinghe. The Peterites however will miss the services of one of their finest batsmen in the 1980 era in Roy Dias, who is coaching in Nepal.

The Thomians not to be outdone are represented by Warden David Ponniah(skipper), a fine opening batsman during his time, Sriyantha Rajapakse, Trevor Rajaratnam, Sunil Wijeyaratne, G.D. V. Perera, Guy de Alwis, Ishak Sahabdeen, Dayal de Silva, Arjuna Hettiarachchi, Ruwan Sirisena, C.P. Richards, Ranil Pieris and Ken de Alwis.

Last year the Peterites clinched the inaugural match and the Man of the Match was Keerthi Gunaratne (St.Peter's), Best Batsman-Ishak Sahabdeen (STC), Best bowler-Keerthi Gunaratne (SPC) and best fielder-Srinath Wijeratne (SPC).

The tournament is sponsored by Mano Chanmugam and this year hosted by the Old Thomians, the Chief Organiser being Ken de Alwis.
