Caltex lends helping hand to deaf and blind

The global petroleum giant, Caltex reiterated its social responsibility last week by handing over goods for deaf and blind children, at a ceremony held at the Ratmalana Deaf and Blind School.

Chairman Caltex and Vice President Asian Lubricants, Martin B. Southern was the chief guest.

The relationship between Caltex and the schools for the deaf began when the Past Pupils Association of the Ratmalana Deaf School approached the company to sponsor a Deaf Schools' Netball Tournament in February 2002.

Working closely for an year with this differently-abled community, Caltex observed various shortcomings in these schools around the island.

There are 19 schools for the deaf and blind registered with the Department of Social Services in Sri Lanka. The Caltex social responsibility project was launched to benefit these schools.

The entire project is valued at nine million rupees. Caltex selected 12 schools for the first phase of the project, utilising six million rupees.

These schools are Ratmalana Deaf School, Ratmalana Blind School, St. Joseph's School for the Deaf and Blind - Ragama, Rohana School for the Deaf and Blind - Matara, Senkadagala School for the Deaf and Blind - Kandy, Koswana School for the Deaf - Matale, Sandagala School for the Deaf and Blind - Kurunegala, Siviraja School for the Deaf and Blind - Mahawewa, Yasodara School for the Deaf and Blind - Balangoda, School for the Deaf and Blind - Anuradhapura, Special School for the Deaf and Blind - Monaragala and School for the Deaf and Blind - Tangalle.

Each received goods worth Rs 500,000. According to Caltex sources, the remaining seven schools would be included in the second phase of the project which is expected to begin soon.

Speaking at the ceremony, Kishu Gomes, Managing Director Caltex Lanka said: "As a private sector company, we at Caltex believe that giving back to the society is an important aspect of our operations. We are governed by the values set by our parent company, ChevronTexaco."
