Kurunegala in 'A' div. rugby after six years

by LAL GUNESEKEA

Kuunegala RFC makes a comeback to competitive rugby after a lapse of six years and will figure in the Caltex 'A' division Inter-Club League Rugby Championship which is scheduled to kick off on April 25.

The first-round will be from April 25 to July 6 and the second from July 12 to August 10. Apart from Kurunegala RFC, the other 11 sides vying for honours will be Kandy Spots Club (reigning champions), CR & FC, Army, Police, CH & FC, Havelocks, Old Zahirians SC, Galle RFC, Navy, Air Force and Kandy Youth SC.

The Secretary of the Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU), Nalin de Silva, told the Sunday Observer that the Council had agreed that two foreigners could represent a club this season, but up to date, no applications have been received of registration. A foreigner could apply two weeks before the start of the season.

De Silva also disclosed that during the season, the Independent Television Network (ITN) will telecast live a key club game every Saturday form April 25 and will charge the SLRFU a very reasonable rate.

This is yet another attempt to further promote rugby in Sri Lanka. He also disclosed that the SLRFU has made a bid to stage the Junior (under-19) Asian Rugby Championship in Colombo at the end of this year, and the Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) will take the final decision on this matter when it meets in China soon.

The new administration of the SLRFU headed by Mohan Balasuriya is determined to stage as many international games in the country as possible. The IRB/ARFU Quadrangular is to be staged in Sri Lanka too, with Sri Lanka playing Arabian Gulf on April 18 at Longden Place, Japan on April 22 also at Longden Place and Hong Kong on May 31 also at Longden Place. Japan's games with Arabian Gulf and Hong Kong will be arranged by the respective Unions.
