Doing business in Sinhala Well-known marketer Deepal Sooriyaarachchi launched three books - Kalayen Weda Genme Kalawa (time management), Sabhaven Avasarai (presentation skills) and Sevaka Sampatha (recruiting and training) - recently. These books are the latest in his series Sinhalen Business (Doing business in Sinhala) published by Sarvodaya Vishwalekha. The other two books in the series are Sinhalen Business (marketing concepts in simple Sinhala) and Paribhogika Sathkaraya (customer care). "Although the language of commerce is English, the majority of our people communicate in Sinhala and Tamil. Business is very much knowledge-based, but most of the modern business knowledge is available only in English. This has placed the Sinhala-only crowd at a competitively disadvantageous position. When information is available in one's mother tongue, it is assimilated fast and understood better. But little is being done to fill this gap. My books attempt to do just that," Sooriyaarachchi said. A General Manager of Eagle Insurance, Sooriyaarachchi has received training in management-related subjects both here and abroad. He has a Diploma in Marketing from the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), UK and a Masters in Business Administration from the Post Graduate Institute of the University of Sri Jayawardenepura. He is a Fellow of the CIM as well and was President of the Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing in 1999. He has conducted many training workshops and seminars on marketing and personal development in Sri Lanka and abroad. |
