Kumudu Valley Resort : where Ging Oya meets the Indian Ocean by BEVERLEY JANSZ The latest addition to the Sri Lankan hotel industry is Kumudu Valley Resort, Nainamadama in Wennappuwa. Just seven kilometres from Negombo and 17 kilometres from the Bandaranaike International Airport, this unique family resort stands at a scenic location where Ging Oya meets the Indian ocean.
The resort has 12 spacious chalets. Each could accommodate an entire family. All chalets are equipped with all modern facilities that a star class hotel offers, including hot/cold water, telephone, AC, large TV, large baths and mini bar. The chalets have been given a beautiful interior decor, and equipped with rare antique furniture. The designing has been done by the Chairman of the resort, Christian Fernando, with a flourish of nature itself so that guests get a scenic view of the Ging Oya and Indian Ocean with a draught of fresh air. The main attraction offered to both foreign guests and Sri Lankans is boat riding on the Ging Oya. Within a short space of time, Kumudu Valley Resort has become extremely popular among tourists for bird watching as a large number of species of birds could be seen at dawn and at night. Sandwiched between the Ging Oya and the blue waters of the Indian Ocean, the resort is certainly a honeymooner's paradise due to its beautiful location and romantic atmosphere. the resort has also become popular for large scale wedding ceremonies and other banquet ceremonies due to the spacious and beautiful garden overlooking the Ging Oya which has been tastefully landscaped. 'Most of our clients insist on their functions being held in the open air in the large garden due to the scenic view of the Ging Oya and the beach,' Chairman, Kumudu Valley Resort, Christian Fernando said. The banquet hall accommodates over 350 guests and over 500 in the garden space. The resort offers its guests Western, Eastern, Chinese and Sri Lanka cuisine prepared by two expert cooks. The big hit is its seafood cuisine prepared from the catch of the day from the Indian Ocean. An added attraction is that Catamarans and boats are on offer where tourists catch a bit of adventure with the fishing rod in the climes of the Ging Oya. 'They could hook their own catch and get them cooked to their taste in the hotel's restaurant, by expert Sri Lankan cooks,' Christian Fernando said. The resort also offers one-day fishing facilities in the Indian Ocean which is very popular among tourists. The resort has two restaurants, a speciality upstair restaurant providing a scenic view of the blue waters of the Ging Oya and the Indian Ocean while dining. Future plans of the resort are focused on water sports. Chairman Kumudu Valley Resort, Christian Fernando said that the resort hopes to conduct a water sports festival with international participation in the near future. It also hopes to build more chalets to cater to the influx of tourists expected in Negombo and Nainamadama which are very popular tourist spots for beach lovers. Kumudu Valley Resort, Nainamadama is owned and managed by Kumudu Valley Resort (Pvt.) Ltd. Its Chairman is Christian Fernando. The resort has been built in Christian's wife name Kumudu, who is also a director of the resort. ########### Lighthouse Hotel adds Spa to its name The Lighthouse Hotel, Galle, a Jetwing hotel, which opened its new Spa in January this year, has changed its name to Lighthouse Hotel and Spa. The hotel sits atop a hillock overlooking the blue waters of the Indian Ocean. Inspired by the Dutch influence in Sri Lanka, the hotel which is in its sixth year of operation, exudes a touch of history and class and offers guests exquisite cuisine and a splendid unmatched view of the blue waters of the Indian Ocean. Lighthouse Hotel and Spa is the only member of the 'Small Luxury Hotels' of the world, in Sri Lanka. designed by legendary architect Geoffrey Bawa. It has 60 deluxe rooms and three theme suites. The many facilities of the hotel include a mini bar, radio and air-conditioning, telephone with IDD facilities and the most recent addition being a second swimming pool. In January this year, Lighthouse Hotel, Galle opened the doors to the first International Spa in Sri Lanka in co-operation with Serena Spa, which operates more than 20 Spas in this region. The Spa facilities include a large relaxing area, cold plunge pool, Jacuzzi pool, steam bath and a number of treatment rooms with private gardens and as a unique feature - a choice of A/C or non A/C treatment environment. Hence, the hotel has been given a new feel and thus, derives its name with a combination of the two and is now known as 'Lighthouse Hotel and Spa. He is the only Sri Lankan in Germany to be in this travel category. In 1991 he was awarded the Silver medal by SriLankan Airlines and since then his travel agency was among the best agents for SriLankan Airlines in Germany.
